    Everyone has heard of aspartame and Splenda but most people would stare at you strangely if you asked them what Xylitol is. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that can be used as a sugar substitute. In addition to providing fewer calories than regular sugar, it also has many medical benefits. It has been well known for some time in Europe, but in the USA it is relatively unknown and unused. All of that is (hopefully) starting to change. Many dentists are catching on to its benefits and many American companies are popping up to provide Xylitol products and increase its production. Here are some of the many benefits it provides...

    Oral Health: When used correctly, it can reduce the incidence of cavities. The optimum amount of Xylitol to produce this effect is between 4 and 10 grams per day. Gums and mints are a very popular way to keep the Xylitol in your mouth while it does its work. It has also been scientifically proven to inhibit the growth of cavity and plaque causing bacteria in the mouth. Some toothpastes are now including Xylitol as well.

    Diabetes: Xylitol has a very small effect on a person's blood sugar levels. It has specifically been marketed as safe for diabetics.

    Nasal Spray: Xylitol inhibits the growth of certain bacteria in the nose that can cause disease. Nasal sprays are now on the market.

    There are currently many other studies being done on the effects of Xylitol. It is being researched for use in helping the body's immune response, osteoporosis, and fighting oral yeast infections.

    The downsides to Xylitol are very few. In large quantities (around 60 grams) it can have a laxative effect, depending heavily on the individual. This is the only adverse effect that is known for humans. A person can develop a tolerance to it within a couple of weeks. Despite being safe for humans, it is not safe for pets.

    So the question is, how can you gain the benefits of Xylitol for yourself? If you're going to chew gum or eat mints with Xylitol - you want to make sure they have enough Xylitol content. Make sure that whatever product you find has at least 0.5-1 grams of Xylitol per piece. This makes it easy to get the recommended minimum of 4 grams per day. If you want to use it as a sugar substitute, you can buy bags - of it online and use it at the same ratio as you would regular sugar.
